I started painting the weights which were giving me some problems where in the colour ramp they would appear on unrelated parts of my mesh. I reattempted it a few times until I just went with a basic weighting influence that was smoothed on the limbs to avoid risk of creating new imperfections by accident. Using the Prune Small Weights tool a lot helped cull the low level weights. I was also using a Subdiv Proxy by this point to help with animating.
