For lighting and shadows I used 3 point lighting with a spot light for a key light, a directional light for fill light and a ambient light for the rim light. At first the shadows looked a bit jagged so I messed around with the attribute editor until they looked smoother. I also adjusted my shadows so that they had a purple hue, as I feel purple is quite effective as a shadow colour.
