I have completed the overall model here so now it's time for fixing up any minor problems with the mesh before I merge it, such as the eye socket area below:
What happened was I had created the eye sockets on a new separate plane and merged it with the rest of the cat's face. However the plane faces for the eye sockets were inverted and therefore showed up with difference in lighting and border edges that looked unattached from the rest of the cat's face. Tanya suggested checking the normals for the faces on this plane and to invert them, and this solved the problem! :)
Here is the joined mesh however it has not been smoothed in this image and the ears still need work as they are too triangular:
